| Boni, me & my mom in 2004 |
I remember coming to her when I just 16 years old with a risky idea. I was a junior in high school and absolutely obsessed with everything about Hollywood. After making small talk for a bit, I gathered the courage to tell her my big plan. "I would love to write a column for the school newspaper. I could write movie reviews, pop culture editorials, award show predictions and so much more."
"Great idea, Ross!" I couldn't believe it. She was on board! I decided to push it further.
"And, umm, I wanna do it under a pseudonym."
She stared at me blankly. "Really? A pseudonym? Like what?"
I gave it to her straight. "Something fabulous. Something that says 'ENTERTAINMENT'. I'm thinking 'Skip Rydell'. Doesn't that sound... soooo Hollywood?"
She paused, holding back a smile. Was she laughing at me? Was I as ridiculous and annoying as some of the bullies told me I was?
She laughed and clapped her hands together before exlaiming, "I think it's brilliant! Do it. Have fun!"
And, boy, did I have fun with it! It was the first time I saw my thoughts in print, for the whole school to see. I felt important. I felt special. And it was all because of Boni's willingness to allow me to express my creativity.
This year, Boni is on the board of the annual Washington State Journalism Education convention. Thousands of students from all over my home state will gather to share, learn and inspire one another. Also, they'll be treated to amazing guest speakers, including Dan Savage, the creator of the viral 'It Gets Better' campaign.
Boni needs to raise $5,000 for this important event. I need you to help. If you can, please click HERE or on the link at the top (right) of the blog and donate. It can be as little as $5 and as much as a gazillion dollars.
I've donated because I hope more kids get the chance to meet people like Boni. Everyone should have the same chance I had to feel important, special and able to express their creativity.
Thanks, everyone!
:)
Ross
